Here's your chance to help host the United States Olympic Gymnastics Trials being held here from June 6 through June 13 at the Arena. It is a Baltimore first and 600 volunteers, age 18 and over, are needed.

In seven days of trials, approximately 50 of the country's top male and female gymnasts will compete to determine the 14 gymnasts who will represent the United States at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

A 16-member volunteer board is organizing the event with 150 volunteer workers at present plus 40 children who will act as runners, flashers and ceremony presenters.

Jan Greenhawk is chairman of the volunteer committee and says she needs volunteers every day from June 1 through June 15, for hospitality for the athletes and VIPs, monitoring of doors and checking credentials ''to be sure the right person is in the right spot,'' she says.

She also says she is in desperate need of people who can offer transportation.

Volunteers will also distribute equipment, provide assistance to the media, handle the telephones, field questions, deal with emergencies, relay information and more.

''The hours can be completely flexible. For one hour or all day we need help. The ideal hours for us would be in shifts from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.; noon to 6 p.m. and 5 to 11 p.m.,'' she says.

Ms. Greenhawk, 37, falls into this volunteer job easily. She teaches elementary school in Talbot County, is a coach and a judge of gymnastics and is regional chairman for the U.S. Gymnastic Federation.

Anyone wishing to discuss volunteering may call Jan Greenhawk in Oxford at (410) 226-5943 between 4 and 7 p.m or leave a message. Her address is 100 Willows Ave., Oxford, Md. 21654.

Applications for those who want to volunteer may be picked up at the box office of the Baltimore Arena between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday until Memorial Day. After that date they may be picked up at the same location from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sue Kralik, at the U.S. Olympic Gymnastic Trials headquarters in Baltimore is also serving as a volunteer coordinator. She may be reached at 576-8343.
