Vice Admiral John A. Baldwin Jr., who was born in Baltimore and attended school here, is retiring from the U.S. Navy Oct. 1 after 37 years of active service. He is currently serving as president of the National Defense University at Fort Lesley J. McNair in Washington.

Sekai R. Chideya of Forest Park, who is a life sciences major at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, is one of 48 students selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to participate in a six-week Space Life Sciences training program at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. During the residential program, from June 20 to July 31, she will engage in flight and ground support research, lectures, tours and special projects designed to provide an overview of the field of space life sciences.

Baltimorean Moira Egan, a student at Columbia University in New York, has won the university's first annual David Craig Austin Memorial Prize for her manuscript chosen as best poetry collection.

Patrick Antkowiak, a student at St. Joseph Fullerton, won a four-year, full tuition Marion Burk Knott Scholarship at the school.
