Compelling viewing

"JFK" may infuriate you or inspire you, depending on your position on the matter of 11-22-63; but this I guarantee you: it will not let you go. Oliver Stone's polemic is treacherous in its disregard for the facts and has a distressing tendency to dramatize as actual that which is only surmise. Still, the movie is mesmerizing, a whirligig of film styles, recreations, bravura performances and fascinating opinion. Rated R. ** 1/2 . The genius of American composers is the theme of tomorrow's 3 p.m. concert at the Second Presbyterian Church by the Handel Choir of Baltimore. The choir's music director, T. Herbert Dimmock, will present, among other works, the Baltimore premiere of one of Leonard Bernstein's last works, "Missa Brevis." Tickets are $14 for general admission and $10 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased by calling Telecharge at (410) 625-1400. For further information, call (410) 366-6544.

'Lethal' laughs

"Lethal Weapon 3" reunites Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in a shoot-'em-up comedy about a bad cop who sells confiscated handguns to street gangs. But forget plot: They blow up a real building and burn down a real housing project in this one. Joe Pesci returns, and Rene Russo also puts in an appearance. Rated R. ** 1/2 .

Stephen Hunter Craig Lucas' "Prelude to a Kiss" -- receiving its area premiere at Olney Theatre -- is a quirky, fascinating look at the question: How well can one person know another? Though Olney's production stretches the limits of quirkiness and detracts from the fascination, this delightful work still manages to encourage us to take a chance on love, to trust our hearts and most of all, to savor life. Weekend performance times are tonight at 8 and tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. at Olney Theatre, 2001 Olney-Sandy Spring Road (Route 108). Tickets are $20-$23. Call (301) 924-3400.
