Lighthouse bill becomes law

May 13, 1992

Gov. William Donald Schaefer signed a bill into law establishing a special fund for the preservation of Maryland lighthouses.

House Bill 351, introduced by Del. W. Ray Huff, a Pasadena Democrat, allows the Maryland Historical Trust to open an account and accept donations and grants to finance the preservation effort.

In 1989, Huff helped establish the Maryland Commission to Save Lighthouses, a group of volunteers who are compiling a list of the state's surviving lighthouses and their needed repairs. The group also conducts education programs, including an oral history of the lighthouse.
