Greeting garners a gunshot Woman fires, misses after man's street salutation.

May 11, 1992

Lawrence Brooks says he got a nasty reply last night when he wished a woman a happy Mother's Day in West Baltimore.

She took a shot at him, Baltimore police said.

Brooks, 35, told police he was standing outside his home in the 2400 block of W. Baltimore St. about 11:30 p.m. when a woman in her 20s and an escort walked by. Mr. Brooks said he wished the woman a happy Mother's Day and waited for a reply.

Instead of answering with words, police said, the woman turned to her companion, who reached in his jacket and gave her a handgun. The woman fired at least one shot at Mr. Brooks. The bullet missed him, but it shattered the front window of his house.

Not waiting for another shot, Mr. Brooks ran inside, police said.

By the time police arrived, the woman and her escort had fled.
