26-year-old charged with attempted rape

A Glen Burnie woman told police that a man with a knife tried to rape her Saturday evening in a bedroom of his home.

Police said the 19-year-old woman knew the suspect, but was not a friend. She told authorities the man came up behind her in his home on Crain Court in Glen Burnie, threatened her with a knife and made suggestive comments to her.

The woman said she grabbed the knife and cut the suspect on his hand. The man then left.

Bryan Hocks, 26, of the 200 block of Crain Circle, was charged with attempted rape. He was treated for a cut at North Arundel Hospital, but was not admitted.

Smoky fire damages Bates High School

A small but smoky fire that officials believe may have been deliberately set caused minor damage to the historic Wiley H. Bates High School Saturday morning.

Two people walking by the school off Spa Road in Annapolis reported seeing smoke pouring out of several windows in the boarded-up two-story brick building.

It took 17 firefighters 1 1/2 hours to put out the blaze, which was confined to the gym on the first floor near the main entrance. Battalion Chief Charles Clark said firefighters had a tough time. "It was a hard fire to find," he said. "There was smoke coming out of a lot of windows."

The building was Anne Arundel's only high school for blacks until desegregation.

The cause of the one-alarm fire, reported about 9:30 a.m., was still under investigation Saturday.

Police arrest two in Glen Burnie raid

Two men were arrested Friday night when police raided their Glen Burnie home and said they found drug paraphernalia and a small amount of marijuana.

Police said narcotics detectives armed with a search and seizure warrant went into a home in the 8000 block of Stonehaven Drive about 11:30 p.m. and saw the men sitting near a marijuana pipe.

They said additional items used for smoking drugs, as well as marijuana and $175, also were found and seized.

Richard Leroy Goodnow, 21, of the 8000 block of Stonehaven Drive, and Daniel Alan Bowen, 22, of the unit block of Chester Circle, were charged with possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

3 suspects sought in robbery

Police were looking over the weekend for three men who robbed a Brooklyn Park woman Friday night near her home.

Jill Annette Jennings told police she was walking toward Ritchie Highway on 11th Avenue when she passed three men sitting on the sidewalk in front of Ollie's Bargain Shop.

A man hollered to her, "Hey, got any money?" police said. Jennings ignored the remark, but the men suddenly ran up behind her, forced her arms behind her back and stole $24. The men then ran through a McDonald's parking lot toward Baltimore.

One of the suspects was described as a white male standing 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 140 pounds and between 18 and 19 years old. He has reddish hair cut in a bob style and was wearing a light-blue hooded sweat shirt and jeans.

The second man was described as a white male, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 18 years old. He had black hair, short in front and long in back, and was wearing a black T-shirt with a Harley Davidson emblem on the front. He also had jeans with holes.

The third man was described as a white male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 140 pounds with long black hair and acne on his face.
