WEST WINDSOR NEW JERSEY — Rider eliminates Towson in ECC, 9-4 WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- Rider College (15-33), beaten three times in regular-season play by Towson State (29-18-1) last weekend, gained revenge when it counted yesterday.

Rider belted the Tigers, 9-4, in the second round of the East Coast Conference tournament at West Windsor Park, breaking the losers' six-game winning streak.

In other ECC action, Hofstra stopped Brooklyn, 11-1, and UMBC remained in the winners' bracket with a 10-2 conquest of Central Connecticut State. Towson State met Central Connecticut last night, with the loser eliminated.

Rider had only one extra-base hit, a home run by John Hart. However, that, coupled with singles and aggressive base-running (eight stolen bases in the game) helped the home team score all its runs in the third and fourth innings.

Joby Weakland and Joe Hughes pitched for Towson State.

Rider pitchers Rob Gontkosky and Jeremy Brendle combined to limit the opposition to six hits, including two apiece by Jacen Martinez and Rick Bagnasco. It marked only the third time this season that junior hitting star Jay Logwood had been checked without a hit.

Monmouth 10-1, Mount 2-2

EMMITSBURG

EMMITSBURG -- Pinch hitter Mike Zinzi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Mount St. Mary's (9-27, 4-12) made off with a 2-1 victory over Monmouth (23-14, 10-7) and a split of their Northeast Conference doubleheader.

The visitors collected 15 hits, including a pair of three-run home runs, to win the first game, 10-2.

In the nightcap, the Mount's Tim Sheahan picked up his fourth win of the year, hurling an eight-hitter. Monmouth's only run came with two out in the seventh to force the extra inning.

Chris Lipari, who singled in the Mount's first run in the fifth, doubled to start the eighth, and Mike MacMillan followed with a bunt single. Monmouth intentionally walked Ed McCarron, who had homered in the first game, to load the bases.

York 13-5, Salisbury 0-4

SALISBURY

SALISBURY -- Steve Gaiski's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning scored Mike Franklin with the winning run as York (25-11) completed a doubleheader sweep of Salisbury State (12-19).

Dustin Beck, Jason Brubaker, and Mike Webb combined for a shutout for York in the opening game. Garrett Trout went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Franklin drove in three runs.

Brad Richerts went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a home run for Salisbury State in the nightcap.

Region XX tournament

Anne Arundel Community College (30-8) opened the rain-delayed program with a 5-3 victory over Potomac State (18-12) at Dundalk CC.

Dwayne Hoyt scattered eight hits in a route-going effort for Anne Arundel.

Jerry Nicklow's two-run double highlighted a three-run second inning, and Jerry Sigler singled to drive in a run, and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly in a two-run fourth, as the Pioneers crammed their scoring into the two innings.
