Motorist is killed in van-car collision

One man is dead and another seriously injured after a head-on collision Tuesday morning in Clarksville on Route 108.

Their identities were withheld pending family notification.

Police said the accident occurred when a white Toyota traveling east crossed the center line at Route 108 and Little Patuxent Court and collided with a van. Police said the van flipped on its right side. The driver of the Toyota was killed.

Three other passengers in the van were taken to Howard County General Hospital. Police say they are investigating the accident.

Mother accidentally strikes son with car

A Laurel mother accidentally struck her 8-year-old son with her car this weekend after she dropped him off at a baseball game.

No charges were filed against Brigitte Whitacre, of the 9700 block of Mountain Laurel Way. Her son, Brandon, was flown by helicopter to Children's Hospital in Washington, where he is in fair but stable condition.

Police said Whitacre dropped Brandon and another son off at Guilford Park Saturday morning to play a baseball game. She was looking over her shoulder to leave when she noticed another car trying to back into a parking space.

Police said she turned her car to get out of the other motorist's way and pulled up, hitting her son.

Police said her rear left tire knocked Brandon to the ground and struck his head.

9 in county booked after drug ring raid

Nine people were arrested in Howard County Saturday in connection with a major drug ring that police said distributed heroin in Baltimore and made millions of dollars a week.

Police believe the suspects were involved in making and distributing the opiate substitute fentanyl, which has killed 27 people in Maryland since the beginning of this year.

Police found two pounds of heroin, two loaded handguns, bullet-proof vests, packaging material and more than $15,000 in cash at the suspects' apartments.

Police said the heroin was packaged in Columbia and distributed in Baltimore.

Arrested were Christine Lamp kin, 21, Franklin Sanchez, 27, and Carlos Ortiz, 26, all of the 10400 block of Hickory Ridge Road; LaShonda Washington, 21, and Kenneth Jones, 29, both of the 4900 block of Columbia Road. Police believe Ortiz was the leader of the organization.

Also arrested were: Turonn P. Lewis, 24, of the 2100 block of Chelsea Terrace in Baltimore; Tyrone Reynolds, 25, of unknown address; Ronald L. Williams, 21, of the 1900 block of Ridgehill Ave. in Baltimore; and Darrell Lewis, 30, of the 5400 block of Cedonia Ave. in Baltimore.

Homes and apartments in Baltimore and Baltimore County also were raided by local police and FBI agents.

Clerk grabs gun during robbery bid

Only later did 25-year-old Ossie Spears realize how foolish it was to struggle with a gunman who tried to hold him up at an Ellicott City gas station convenience store.

He's lucky to be alive, say police.

Police said an armed man entered the Shell Mart on the 8500 block of U.S. 40 on Friday night and demanded cash.

"He pointed the gun at my chest and asked me to put money into a bag," said Spears, a clerk. "I told him I didn't believe the gun was real and asked him to open the chambers for me. Unfortunately for him, he did."

Spears said he grabbed the gun and pulled the gunman over the counter. The two wrestled for the gun and got involved in a struggle that dragged outside, where the gunman fled on foot after seeing cars pull up for gas.

Police reported no injuries and no money taken. Police are looking for a medium-built black male in his early 20s wearing a New York Yankees baseball cap.

"I was stupid for grabbing the gun, but it was the only chance I had," said Spears.
