If Mom has been glancing anxiously your way this week, that's because Sunday is Mother's Day and you still haven't gotten her a present. She knows these things -- she has eyes in the back of her head.

For those having trouble finding just the right gift, a word of advice:

Elegance.

Some of the most appreciated gifts on Mother's Day are the ones that make Mom look great. From make-overs to lingerie, stores offer high-fashion gifts for your biggest fan.

A cosmetic make-over can provide a fresh, new start at the beginning of the maternal year. Launched in time for Mother's Day, the JCPenney Styling Salons offer new gift certificate make-overs in the price range of $25 to $200. make-overs

When a gift certificate is presented, salons offer the holder a selection of services -- including facials, manicures, and pedicures -- based on the value of the gift. Certificates are redeemable make-oversin any JCPenney with a cosmetics department, says Catherine Jones, marketing programs manager for cosmetics. "So if your mother lives in Iowa and you live in New York, you can mail it to her."

Lingerie has a particular feminine charm as a gift from daughter to mother. Offering a complementary floral potpourri with any intimate apparel purchase, Saks Fifth Avenue encourages a personal gift. "Most of the time she buys the necessities and we try to get her the trends," says Nancy Sachs, fashion director at Saks in Owings Mills.

Another popular gift this year is the jewel of the sea. Whether real or faux, pearls are a sure win with Mom, Ms. Sachs says. "Pearls are forever. If Barbara Bush can wear them, so can everybody else."

But choosing the right strand for your first lady can be a challenge. In honor of Mother's Day, the Hecht Co. will provide a pearl demonstration at Security Square Mall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, where Marvella pearls will be showcased.

Many moms might appreciate the gift of a scarf, which can add a little zest to any number of outfits. Last-minute shoppers can go to a scarf-tying demonstration and purchase a scarf at Hechts in Owings Mills on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Anybody with a mother knows how important choosing the right Mother's Day gift can be. Whether you give her sleepwear or cosmetics on her day, it is the one day set aside to return all the love she gives you the rest of the year and say 'Thank you, Happy Mother's Day.'

"It's a time to reflect how important it is to be kind to each other," Ms. Sachs noted, "and nothing is kinder than a mother."
