Either Hammond or Howard is expected to win the county girls track championship this week at Oakland Mills High School.

Hammond, the defending champion, is led by sophomore HTC sprinter Kisha Jett, winner of four county events last year. She set the county record in the long jump at 17-8 1/2 .

Jett also won three gold medals in the state championships, including the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races. She was thought to be the first freshman ever to win three gold medals in a state meet.

Jett also excels in the long jump, having jumped 19 feet this year, tops in the Baltimore area.

Her times in the 100 (11.8 seconds) and the 200 (25.8) are also tops in the area, and her 400 time of 1:00.8 is third best. She also has a third-best time of 46.6 in the 300 hurdles.

"I'm sure she'll run the 100 and do the long jump, but I'm not sure what other two events she'll do," Hammond coach Joe Russo said.

The Bears have another outstanding talent who figures to win multiple medals in the championships, being held Wednesday and Thursday. Junior Samantha Andersch will run the 800, 1600 and 3200, and the 3200 relay. She's a two-time defending county champ in the 1600 and 3200.

And Hammond junior Melanie White has posted the county's best 100 hurdles time this year: 17.7 seconds. She also competes in the triple jump and long jump.

Hammond's 3200 relay time of 10:25 also is the county's best so far. Andersch, Kacy Williams, Debbie Townsend and Rachel Benkhen make up that squad.

Williams will also run the 800, and freshman Monica Stevens looks strong in the 200 and triple jump.

Howard has sprung up from nowhere to challenge Hammond.

Freshman Mona Jackson is one of the biggest reasons. Her 34-8 in the triple jump is fourth best in the Baltimore area, and her 5-2 high jump is just 1 inch off the area's best. She also long jumps.

Junior sprinter Tori Mills owns the third-fastest Baltimore area 200 time of 26.5. Senior Diedre Presley should do well in the 400.

Junior Camille Powell has run 5:42 in the 1600, 2:36 in the 3200, and has a 31-3 in the triple jump.

Senior Julie Bowers has triple-jumped 31 feet, high-jumped 5 feet and run a 50.3 in the 300 hurdles.

Howard's 400 and 800 relay teams are threats to win titles.

The 400 team of Mills, Nicolle Showell, Jenny McClanahan and Presley ran a 50.9 and finished 21st out of 216 teams at the Penn Relays. Both the 400 and 800 teams have posted the third-best Baltimore-area times.

That all adds up to a lot of excitement for coach Joe Thomas and Howard High track fans.

Glenelg and Centennial figure to vie for third and fourth places.

Glenelg is led by Debbie Snyder, defending county champ in the shot put. She also throws discus.

The Gladiators, county runner-ups last year, have strong 3200 and 1600 relay teams. Junior Kelly Pelovitz should place in the 1600 and 800, and runs on both the 3200 and 1600 relays.

Sophomore Marguerite Rupsis runs three relays and the 300 hurdles.

Centennial has several athletes who should place, including Lisa Holt (200), Marnie Sigler (discus, shot put), Jen McManus (high jump), Ha Lam (3200), Wendy Johnston (hurdles, sprints) and Jane Chen (jumps, sprints).

Two freshman give Wilde Lake high hopes. Kristen Riismandel runs the 800 and 1600. Adelle Chenier runs the 100 and 200.

Atholton has Gail Hodges (3200), Kathleen Monahan (800), Ameri Elsawi, Robin McGraw and Andrea Comerer (triple, long and high jumps, respectively).

Kristi Avery leads Oakland Mills in the 800, and in the 3200 and 1600 relays. Aimee Diskin and Nina Tucker will be factors in the hurdles events, as the Scorpions hope to finish as high as third.
