Flowers, flea markets, food -- it must be spring Weather permitting, weekend is a busy one

Keep your fingers crossed that this weekend will be much dryer than the last seven we've experienced since spring arrived, especially since a few local events are on the agenda.

* Flowers and food will be sold at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow. The Women of St. Andrew's will be selling bedding plants and flowers, hanging baskets, white elephant items, treasures (including books) and homemade baked goods. The luncheon menu is packed with a variety of sandwiches, homemade soups and fresh croissants. Proceeds will benefit the church's general maintenance fund.

* The Jacobsville Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association is sponsoring a Spring Craft and Flower Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the school, 3801 Mountain Road.

Crafters will be selling an array of items, including handmade jewelry, Southwestern wood art, floral swags, ceramics, needle crafts, portrait mugs and handmade watercolor and ink note cards by artist Shelly Wilson. Vegetable plants and annuals will be available. Light refreshments will be sold.

* Pasadena United Methodist Church, 61 Ritchie Highway, is sponsoring a flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Proceeds will benefit the church's missionary support fund.

* The United Methodist Women of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church invites you to shop at its flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow. Luncheon items, baked goods, plants and a variety of items will be available. The church is located at 4760 Mountain Road.

* Stop by Community United Methodist Church, 8680 Fort Smallwood Road, between 4 and 7 p.m. tomorrow for a delicious hot roast beef dinner. Roast beef, mashed potatoes, string beans, beverages and desserts will be served. Carryouts will be available. The cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 4 to 12. Youngsters age 3 and under will be admitted for free.

Next time you drop by the Riviera Beach Library, take a few minutes to admire the 470-foot reading chain compiled by young Pasadena readers.

While our branch did not have the longest chain -- South County in Deale captured that honor -- young readers in Pasadena hTC contributed 2,350 links. Each link represents a book read during the Link Up for Libraries project.

Young county readers contributed close to 50,000 links, measuring three miles long. Library spokeswoman Diane Rey called this year's program a great success. This year's chain measures 10 times longer than last year's, when 6,000 links were collected.

* The Mountain Road Kiwanis Club will sponsor an anti-drug assembly for students at Lake Shore Elementary at 9 a.m. May 5.

The program will include games and a question and answer session. Students will receive visors emblazoned with the "Know to Say No" logo. Stringbean the Clown will entertain the students. Students will write letters to President Bush and Governor Schaefer, pledging their abhorrence of drug use. Principal Thomas Johnson and Kiwanis Chairman David Blanch will conduct the program.

* The Solley Elementary School Improvement Team is looking for interested community residents and parents to become members.

Team members are involved in determining and implementing school improvements. Meetings are scheduled for every second Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

* The Chesapeake High School Athletic Boosters will award $500 scholarships to two senior student-athletes, one boy and one girl.

Students will be judged on their athletic and scholastic performances. They also must write essays. Applications are available from the school's guidance office. The application deadline is May 11. The boosters also are accepting nominations for next year's board of directors.

* "Great Play!" summer camp for children ages 4 to 12 returns to Gibson Island Country School for two weeks this summer.

The camp will operate from 9 a.m. to noon, Mondays through Fridays, July 6 to 17. Under Paul Pellicani's direction, campers will participate in team and individual sports and activities tailored to specific age groups.

Younger campers, ages 4 to 6, will venture into the world of

Clifford the Big Red Dog and various other animals during story sessions. Older campers, ages 7 to 12, will participate in a variety of activities, many using the school's unique bay-side campus. Children can pull in crabs, haul up oysters, learn about wildlife populations and search for waterfowl along the the marsh, wetlands, forests and fields. Campers can use the Apple IIGS computer lab. Older campers also will enjoy arts and crafts, including paper mache, weaving, batik, drawing, painting and printing.

Tuition for the two-week session is $140; $75 for one week. A non-refundable deposit must be included with registration forms.
