Early Derby line A.P. Indy, Technology to give Arazi run for the roses

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- There's no question who's been cast in the starring role of the 118th Kentucky Derby.

Every time Arazi turns his head or pricks his ears, the ever-growing media horde records the moment. If the colt's trainer, Francois Boutin, happens to poke his head out of Barn 45, he sees dozens of cameras and microphones, poised and ready.

"I'm not used to this -- it's a little scary," Boutin said.

All the attention on Arazi makes you wonder why the other 18 horses scheduled to run in the Derby bothered to show up at Churchill Downs.

It's as if everyone is expecting a coronation and not a horse race this Saturday.

While this doesn't appear to be a particularly strong supporting cast of 3-year-olds, there are horses with the credentials to give Arazi a tussle. The two betting choices behind the heavily favored Arazi are expected to be A.P. Indy and Technology.

The two colts have one thing in common: they didn't run against Arazi in last year's Breeders' Cup here. That means they'll be testing last year's 2-year-old champ for the first time.

A.P. Indy is a fashionably bred son of Seattle Slew; he's a half-brother to Summer Squall, who had some success in the 1990 Triple Crown races.

A.P. Indy cost his owner, Japanese businessman Tomonori Tsurumaki, $2.9 million as a yearling; only 24 yearlings have cost more.

Tsurumaki owns a 70,000-seat auto-racing track in Japan, which is why the colt has a name connected with auto racing.

One thing you should know about A.P. Indy's trainer, Neil Drysdale: he said he wouldn't come to the Derby unless he had a horse who could win the race. In his 18th year of training, Drysdale finally has his first Derby horse.

"When somebody spends a lot of money for a horse, you always hope that horse will be something special," Drysdale said. "And A.P. Indy is something special."

A.P. Indy has a unique running style, dropping his head low to the ground as he maneuvers around the track with long strides.

"Horses are able to extend themselves more with their head down like that," Drysdale said. "It shows A.P. Indy has a lot of determination."

A.P. Indy's jockey, Eddie Delahoussaye, has ridden two Derby winners: Gato del Sol in 1982 and Sunny's Halo in 1983.

He says of A.P. Indy: "He's as good a horse as those two and has a better pedigree. He does everything easy and can run all day.

"And he's smart. But I guess for that kind of money, A.P. Indy should be able to talk."

Like Arazi, A.P. Indy is undefeated after losing the first start of his career.

Technology, winner of the Florida and Tropical Park derbies, would be getting much more attention this week if not for the dominating presence of Arazi. For one thing, Technology is an improving horse who comes into the Derby with a three-race winning streak.
