WESMINSTER — WESTMINSTER -- Students in the state and local politics course at Western Maryland College recently visited Annapolis and met Gov. William Donald Schaefer and heard talks from Lt. Gov. Melvin Steinberg, Comptroller Louis L. Goldstein and Sens. Gerald Winegrad (Class of 1966), Julian Lapides and George Della Jr.
The group also heard from Steve Ports (Class of 1983), an analyst for the Senate Finance Committee, and Peter Kumpa, Senate historian.
Sue Kopen Katcef of Maryland Public Television and Lou Davis of WMAR-TV discussed the media's role in covering the State House.
This was the 17th year for the political science professor Herb Smith todirect the Annapolis tour for his students. Four international students and Christianna Nichols, associate professor of political science, also attended.
ENTER LOGO DESIGN CONTEST
WESTMINSTER -- Carroll County students in grades six through eight areinvited to enter a logo design contest for the Journalism Club's news magazine, In/Sane.
The contest is sponsored by the county citizen services and recreation and parks departments and public schools. The club is sponsored by the After School Activities Program.
All entries must be in black and white, designed to fit on a T-shirt, and submitted to the West Middle School office by May 14.
The winning entry will be announced May 21. The winner will receive $25 cash. Entries will be judged by the staff of the Department of Recreation and Parks.
