Texas Rangers -- Purchased the contract of RHP Todd Burns (0-1, 2.25 ERA in 2 starts) from Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated C Doug Davis (1 hit, 1 AB) for assignment. If he clears waivers he will by sent outright to Oklahoma City.


USA Basketball -- Named Maryland coach Chris Weller coach of the USA Women's Select Team that will compete for the R. William Jones Cup in Taipei, Taiwan.

NBA -- Fined Golden State C Alton Lister $7,500, Seattle C Shawn Kemp $2,000 and Seattle G Dana Barros $500 for an altercation involving a flagrant foul by Lister on Kemp in Saturday's game and fined Seattle G Nate McMillan $4,000 for a flagrant foul against Sarunas Marciulionis in the same game.

Miami Tropics (USBL) -- Named John Lucas (Maryland) coach, Jim Price assistant coach and Jordan Bressler director of media relations.

New Haven Skyhawks (USBL) -- Signed G Jay Edwards.


Boston College -- Named Nadine Lilavois women's volleyball coach.

Jacksonville -- Announced the resignation of Marty Gross, men's associate head basketball coach, so he can take an assistant coaching position at Rice. Named Glynn Cyprien men's associate head basketball coach, Jim Dolan men's full-time assistant basketball coach and Jeff House men's assistant basketball coach.

Liberty -- Signed Dena Freeman (Lake Clifton) to a basketball letter of intent.

Nebraska -- Announced the signing of gymnast Meghan Nicolini (Annapolis).

Vermont -- Named Richard Farnham athletic director.


NHL -- Suspended Minnesota D Derian Hatcher for three playoff games for a high-sticking incident against Detroit RW Kevin Miller on Friday night.

Philadelphia Flyers -- Extended the contract of Mike Eaves, coach of the AHL Hershey Bears.


Ottawa Rough Riders (CFL) -- Signed DB Brett Young to a three-year contract.
