AUSTIN, TEXAS GREENSBORO, N.C. — GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A leaner, healthier Rocco Mediate fired a 3-under-par 69 and took the lead yesterday after three rounds of the Greater Greensboro Open.
After making the turn at 3-over-par in Thursday's opening round, Mediate said a pep talk from his caddy got him turned around for an even-par 72 finish. A 66 on Friday left him five shots back, and a three-birdie round yesterday got Mediate into the top spot.
Hip and back problems hampered his play last season and, on doctor's orders, Mediate has lost about 30 pounds and is down to about 210.
As for the chase for the $225,000 first prize, Mike Reid, Brad Faxon and Tom Byrum are one shot off the lead at 208. Faxon and Byrum shot 70s, and Reid struggled to a 73 on a cool, windy afternoon.
Senior Legends of Golf
AUSTIN, Texas -- Defending champions Lee Trevino and Mike Hill waited until the back nine to make a move, then had six birdies in a row to take command of the $770,000 Legends of Golf.
Starting the day two strokes back and in third place, Trevino and Hill birdied every backside hole except the 420-yard 16th,
shooting a 12-under-par 60.
Their three-round total of 186 gave them a four-shot lead in the two-man, better-ball tournament. Jim Colbert and Tommy Aaron were alone in second at 26-under 190.
LPGA Sara Lee Classic
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Dana Lofland shot a 1-under-par 71 for a 36-hole total of 136 and a one-stroke lead in the LPGA Sara Lee Classic over the 6,242-yard Hermitage Golf course.
Lofland, in her second year on tour, earned her first victory this year in the Las Vegas LPGA International.
Tina Barrett of Baltimore, who had a career-low 66 Friday, came back with a 71 and was one stroke off the pace, tied with Brandi Burton and Dawn Coe. The 54-hole event ends today.
