After midnight, for Elvis ballots it is, alas, 'Return to Sender' ZHC

April 24, 1992

If you're the type who waits until midnight on April 15 to mail your tax return, maybe we'll see you at the post office tonight as well.

Voting on whether you would prefer a depiction of a younger or older Elvis Presley on an upcoming stamp ends today, and ballots will be accepted only if they are postmarked by midnight.

While some post offices have run out of ballots, you can vote by merely stating your preference on a postcard or in a letter and mailing it to Elvis Poll, P.O. Box Elvis, Memphis, Tenn. 38101-1001.

So far the U.S. Postal Service has received about 1,018,000 ballots, which have been turned over to a private company to tabulate the results, said postal spokeswoman Robin Minard. "We don't want to know how the vote is going, because it could be like an exit poll and sway the voting," she said.

The vote totals will be announced June 4 at Graceland, she said, and the stamp itself is due out the first half of next year.
