Pizza crust company closing local operations

Baltimore Pizza Crust Co. Inc., which once had nearly 200 workers turning out partly baked pizza crusts for restaurants and hotels, will close its local operations within three months, according to the company's president.

Mike Virga said the Lohrs Lane plant in Baltimore has become "fairly obsolete."

"We're sorry to do it," he said, "but we are in a market that is significantly shrinking."

The 33-year-old local operation is owned by Virga's Pizza Crust Co. of Virginia Inc. The Portsmouth-based company has been battered by competition in recent years, Mr. Virga said.

Similar products, such as those marketed under the Boboli brand name, have hurt the company, he said.

Mr. Virga said the company will try to sell its Baltimore plant and equipment. The remaining business will be consolidated into the company's Virginia operation, he said.
