Baltimore Pizza Crust Co. Inc., which once had nearly 200 workers turning out partly baked pizza crusts for restaurants and hotels, will close its local operations within three months, according to the company's president.

Mike Virga said the Lohrs Lane plant in Baltimore has become "fairly obsolete" and has trimmed its staff to 60 workers.

"We're sorry to do it," he said, "but we are in a market that is

significantly shrinking."

The 33-year-old local operation is owned by Virga's Pizza Crust Co. of Virginia Inc. The Portsmouth-based company has been battered by competition in recent years, Mr. Virga said.

Similar products, such as those marketed under the Boboli brand name, have hurt the company, he said. Virga's Pizza Crust Co. never tried to sell its crusts to stores, he said.

The remaining business will be consolidated into the company's Virginia operation, he said.
