Piney Branch Women To Enter Mason-dixon Events

Piney Branch Country Club's women are branching out this season.

For the first time in the club's history, the women will take part inthe Mason-Dixon District Golf Association competitions. Included in the lineup are five clubs from Maryland, two from Pennsylvania and one from Virginia.

"We hade been considering this move for a couple of years," said Connie Henderson, Piney Branch representative in the Mason-Dixon event. "It should give women's golf in Carroll County a major boost."

Henderson is the reigning women's stroke-play champion at Piney Branch.

The format for the Mason-Dixon event has each competing club sending its team members to the designated tournament site on the same day. Approximately 125 women will compete at each event on the schedule and contestants will be paired in flights, with points going to the leading low gross and low net winners.

In addition to Piney Branch, teams are Fountain Head and Beaver Creek of Hagerstown, Holly Hills and Westwinds of Frederick, and clubs from Waynesboro and Chambersburg, Pa., and Winchester, Va.

Opening tournament for the 1992 Mason-Dixon season is May 7 at Holly Hills. Other dates are May 29 at Chambersburg, June 19 at Waynesboro, July 9 at Piney Branch, July 23 atFountain Head, Aug. 11 at Winchester, Sept. 9 at Westwinds and Oct. 11 at Beaver Creek.

Betty Noland is 1992 chairwoman for Piney Branch's 18-hole women golfers. She said the schedule is highlighted by two women's special tournaments -- the Spring Invitational on May 21 and the Fall Shoot-out, on Sept. 17.

Peggy Eline is the reigning women's match-play champion at Piney Branch.

The spring event is a two-member team test and the fall tourney is for foursomes.

Piney Branch's nine-hole women's division is headed by Fran Schmale.

A feature on the schedule is a luncheon and tournament with a theme of Scotland. The event on Aug. 11 is billed "Back to Scotland Where the Game All Began."

The nine-hole group will open with a husband-wife tourney on May 3. The new schedule includes a home-and-home team matchwith Diamond Ridge Club. The teams play at Diamond Ridge on June 16 and at Piney Branch on Sept. 22. Beverly Forchheimer is the nine-holechampion. Pam Sturmfelz is holder of the President's Cup.


The Piney Branch men's golf team went to the third round before bowing in the Maryland State matches. After defeating Elkridge and Hillendale in opening rounds, Piney Branch lost a close 9 1/2-8 1/2 decision to Crofton of Anne Arundel County.

The results at Piney Branch: Wayne Gailey and Howard Swartz tied Jim Lentz and John Briski, 1 1/2-1 1/2; Mark Bertoldi and Charles Palmer defeated Ed Armstrong and GeorgeBodh, 3-0; Steve and Carol Gailey defeated Bill Calhoun and Gary Moore, 2 1/2- 1/2.

At Crofton: Jeff Zachman and Tim Boyd lost to MarkSpolarich and Steve Thomas, 3-0; Ken Mattison and Steve Cimbalister lost to Jerry Iorizzi and Jim Renner, 2 1/2- 1/2; Steve Yount and Doug Jacobs lost to Buddy Peoples and Rocky Anastasi, 2-1.


Jim Hickey, scoring a net 68, won Class A honors in the Liberty Park Golf Club's Master's Tourney at Marlboro Country Club.

Other division winners: Class B -- Vic Duehring, 70; Class C -- Lora Fioretti, 59; and Class D -- Nancy Gise, 56.

The club's next tourney will be May 9at Monroe Valley in Jonestown, Pa.


Both the women's nine- and 18-hole groups will open at Bear Creek on May 4.

Winners of the first senior test at Bear Creek were: Jim Amereihn, 64; Bruno Blonkowski, 65; and Joe Blonkowski, 68. In the second senior event, leaders were Lee Miller, 66; Bruno Blonkowski, 67; and Cliff Melton, 68.
