Officer treated for Mace

April 18, 1992

A Baltimore County police officer accidentally rubbed Mace or a similar chemical into his eye last night after someone sprayed the substance on a door handle of his cruiser as it was parked at a Dundalk shopping center, county police said.

Officer Robert Cordery of the North Point precinct parked in the center in the first block of Dundalk Avenue about 8 p.m. and checked several stores.

When he returned to the car, he grasped the handle to open the door. Shortly afterward, he rubbed his eye, and it started to burn.

He was taken to the Wilmer Institute eye clinic at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where his eye was flushed. The cause of the problem was determined to be Mace or a similar chemical. There was no permanent damage to the eye.
