Vachel A. Downes Jr., a partner in a law firm in Centreville, died Tuesday at his home in Grasonville of a urinary tract infection. He was 67.
Services for Mr. Downes will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Centreville.
He was partner in Downes and Gregory for 13 years, having practiced law in Centreville for a long time before that. He had been attorney for the Queen Anne's County Board of Education.
He was elected president of the Queen Anne's County Bar Association in 1957 and again in 1972. He was a member of the Maryland State Bar Association and the Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity.
The Centreville native was a 1941 graduate of the Centreville High School, a 1945 graduate of Washington College and a 1948 graduate of the University of Maryland law school.
His wife, the former Maude Elizabeth Holley, died in 1981.
He is survived by a son, Vachel A. Downes III of Grasonville; a brother, William H. Downes of Centreville; and two sisters, Jane D. Nelson of Centreville and Fern D. Newsom of Richmond, Va.
