New York Mets -- Placed SS Kevin Elster (weak right shoulder) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Monday. Optioned P Mark Dewey to Triple-A Tidewater. Recalled OF Rodney McCray and 3B Chris Donnels from Triple-A Tidewater.

New York Yankees -- Optioned OF Bernie Williams to Triple-A Columbus. Recalled P Russ Springer from Columbus.

San Diego Padres -- Traded OF Thomas Howard to the Cleveland Indians for IF Jason Hardtke and a player to be named. Signed OF Gary Pettis.

Basketball Cleveland Cavaliers -- Placed G-F Jimmy Oliver (sprained right foot) on injured list. Activated G-F Craig Ehlo from the injured list.

San Antonio Spurs -- Named Jerry Tarkanian coach, effective next season.

Yakima Sun Kings (CBA) -- Robert Reid signed to return as coach in 1992-93.

Colleges Buffalo -- Received letter of intent from 5-7 point guard Melanie Vogel (15.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 4.2 spg, 3.4 apg this season for Institute of Notre Dame). Vogel was first-team All-Metro the past two seasons.

Loyola College -- Received letter of intent from 6-3 G Matt Walker (18.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 7.0 apg at Trinity High in Camp Hill, Pa.).
