Police, fire log

April 15, 1992

A sobriety checkpoint on Route 40 resulted in the arrest of 14 people on drunken driving charges early Saturday morning.

Police also arrested three people on concealed handgun, drug possession and theft charges.

Members of the county's Mothers Against Drunk Driving helped staff the Ellicott City checkpoint.

Weekend vandals spray-painted a Columbia high school and a church under construction with racial slurs and epithets.

Police said vandals spray-painted the words "Satan," "No Niggers," "White Power,"and the figure of an inverted cross on exterior walls at Hammond High School at the 8800 block of Guilford Road between midnight Friday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Police said vandals also spray-painted the SouthColumbia Baptist Church -- adjacent to the high school -- during thesame period with satanic symbols, including inverted crosses, "SatanLives" and "Billy the Kid."

Police said the two incidents may be related because the same

color of paint was used. They are offering $300 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

In an unrelated incident almost two weeks ago, vandals spray-painted a dugout at Atholton High School with "KKK" and broke into a storage shed, stealing hand tools and school banners.
