Leadership Howard County, an organization in Columbia that prepares its members for community service, is accepting applications for its September class. Monthly training sessions focus on education, economic development, health and human services. Participation in the program costs $2,100. Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in Annapolis is accepting applications for its 1992 Community Improvement Youth Grant Program which makes grants up to $250 to groups of youths who submit the best proposals for projects to benefit the community. Joan Cochran was named Overall Top Producer for the Maryland division of Long & Foster Real Estate Inc. Ms. Cochran works out of the Columbia office.

Bendix Field Engineering Corp. in Columbia won a citation from Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer for the company's partnership with Laurel High School. Bendix provided a hands-on space science center for students that will let them monitor a satellite's performance while it is in orbit.

Consulting Engineers Council of Maryland presenting the following Engineering Excellence Awards: Greiner Inc. of Timonium, Grand Award for a bridge design commissioned by the Federal Highway Administration to develop a design for bridges that cross navigable waterways to minimize bridge damage from ships and barges; KCI Technologies Inc. of Baltimore won an award of merit for the completed construction of Blue Route, a 17-mile roadway connecting the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Interstate 95; LPJ Inc. of Baltimore won an award of merit for a 250-foot-long pedestrian skywalk that connects The Baltimore Sun's Calvert Street building with the Chesapeake Center office and garage; Whitman, Requardt and Associates of Baltimore won an award of merit for a technique known as horizontal directional drilling for installing larger diameter pipelines; Whitney, Bailey, Cox & Magnani of Lutherville for the Baltimore Zoo African Plains Watering Hole.

Crawford & Co., a Salisbury-based health and rehabilitation company, named James G. Woodward Jr. Mid-Management Specialist of the Year and Carol Ann Gray Medical Services Specialist of the Year.

KCI Technologies Inc. of Baltimore won the 1991 Grand Design Award from the Baltimore Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for its work on the Camden Yards Sports Complex.

Charles Thomas Lo Presto was named Distinguished Teacher of the Year at Loyola College in Maryland. Mr. Lo Presto is a professor of psychology at Loyola College.

Chapel Valley Landscape Co. of Woodbine recently won the following awards from the Associated Landscape Contractors of America: landscape installation at Dorsey's Search Village Center in Columbia; Crystal City Office Building in Crystal City, Va.; a private home in Potomac; and a Fleet Safety Award.

Maryland Improvement Contractors Association presented the followingContractor of the Year Awards: Faith Home Repair Service for sun room addition, screened porch, small and large ++ addition and attic remodeling; Welsh Construction Remodeling Co. for commercial remodeling and bath room; Buschman Design-Build for kitchen remodeling and large addition; Chesapeake Diversified Corp. for deck renovation; Building Arts Co. for kitchen addition; Fireside Home Remodeling for carpentry; Green Associates for large addition; Waganer Construction for major addition; and Taylor & Sons for whole house renovation.

John W. McDonnell was named New Agent of the Year by Morgan Financial Group Inc. in Lutherville. EA Engineering, Science and Technology Inc., a Hunt Valley-based consulting firm, recently opened a location at Metro Plaza One, 8401 Colesville Road, Suite 500, in Silver Spring.
