* Marine Lance Cpls. Dale A. LaRue and Mark T. Thurston are in the Mediterranean with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and are in the middle of a six-month deployment.

Theyhave been participating in various operations and training exercisesdesigned to challenge the mission readiness of the unit. They recently completed two weeks of intensive training at Camp De Canjuers, France, and a liberty port visit to Haifa, Israel.

Most recently, they arrived in Rota, Spain, and will visit other ports in the Mediterranean as the deployment continues.

LaRue is the son of Raymond A. and Linda L. LaRue of Mount Airy. His wife, Cathy, is the daughter of Doris Kolbe of Westminster. The 1985 South Carroll High School graduate joined the Marine Corps in March 1989.

Thurston is the son of Peggy L. Merson of Woodbine. A 1988 graduate of Glenelg High School, Howard County, he joined the Marine Corps in March 1989.

* Navy Seaman Recruit Michael S. Cooke, son of Douglas L.Cooke of Mount Airy, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla.

During the cycle, recruits are taught general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 occupational fields.

Studies include seamanship, close-order drill, naval history and first aid.

The 1990 Frederick High School graduate joined the Navy in January 1992.

* Navy Seaman Mary S. McCarty recently received a letter of commendation.

She was cited for superior performance of duty while assigned at Naval Station, Norfolk, Va. She consistently performed her demanding duties in an exemplary and highly professional manner.

The daughter of Michael L. McCarty of Mount Airy, the 1990 graduate of Damascus High School, Montgomery County, joined the Navy in July 1990.

* Navy Seaman Recruit Charlene M. Burress recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando,Fla.

During the cycle, recruits are taught general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 occupational fields.

Burress is the daughter of Diana M. Corkran of Hampstead.

* Navy Airman ApprenticeGeorge H. Tutor, son of Nancy M. Tutor of Westminster, is in the Persian Gulf aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, home-ported in Norfolk, Va., and is in the middle of a six-month deployment.

In recent months, the carrier and its crew spent the holidays in Naples, Italy, where some crew members donated more than 1,000 hours to rehabilitating a shelter for the homeless.

Most recently, the ship visitedAntayla, Turkey, before transiting the Suez Canal. The USS America is on its second major deployment in less than a year and was operating in the Mediterranean when reassigned to the gulf.

A 1988 North Carroll High School graduate, Tutor joined the Navy in July 1990.
