Police arrest 17 at sobriety checkpoint

ELLICOTT CITY — Howard County police arrested a total of 17 people yesterday at a sobriety checkpoint in Ellicott City on charges ranging from driving while intoxicated to possession of a concealed handgun.

According to Officer Luther Johnson, police set up the checkpoint in the 8300 block of U.S. Route 40 early yesterday.

During that time, 534 vehicles were stopped and the drivers questioned.

Of those arrested, Officer Johnson said, 14 were charged with driving while under the influence or driving while intoxicated.

RTC Three other people were arrested on criminal charges that included possession of a concealed handgun, theft and possessing drugs.
