Orioles payroll is still among lowest in majors

The signing of a couple of veteran players has helped push the Orioles' average pay up more than 50 percent, but the team still has one of the lowest player payrolls in the majors.

Ranked by average salary, the Orioles are above only the Cleveland Indians, Houston Astros and Montreal Expos. Last year, the Orioles were next to last; the year before, they were last.

According to The Associated Press, the Orioles' 25-man roster carries an average pay of $777,526, up 51 percent from $514,599 last year. The team's total payroll of $20.2 million is up from $13.5 million last year.

The team added several highly paid veterans this year, chiefly pitchers Rick Sutcliffe ($1.2 million) and Storm Davis ($2.5 million).

"This is not an indication that our payroll is low just because we want it low. Our players are paid commensurate with their experience," said Orioles spokesman Bob Miller.

The cheapest team this year is Cleveland, with an average salary of $271,089 and a payroll of $8.1 million. No Indian makes the league average of $1.08 million: The highest paid player earns $950,000.
