Spring Brings Surfacing Of Several Sports Surprises

SPORTS THIS WEEKEND -- County sports events through Sunday

April 08, 1992|By Glenn P. Graham | Glenn P. Graham,Staff writer

Some pleasant surprises have surfaced in the early going of the highschool spring season.

Starting with baseball, Francis Scott Key and South Carroll both entered the week unbeaten. Both teams will try to stay on the winning track this week.

Key will travel to Monocacy Valley Athletic League foe Brunswick of Frederick County tomorrow. The Eagles came into yesterday afternoon's game against Catoctin (after press time) with a perfect 4-0 mark.

Contributions are coming from everybody with a different hero each time out. On Monday, John Engel provided the offensive firepower with a first-inning grand slam and Jason Smith improved to 3-0 on the mound as the Eagles got past North Hagerstown, 5-3.

South Carroll's3-0 start is less of a surprise. The Cavs faced Liberty yesterday (after press) and will play host to Westminster (3-2) today.

Five South Carroll batters were averaging .500 or better after the first three games with Brian Yannick leading the way at .667. The Cavaliers also are getting solid pitching from Joe Goodwin, who's allowed just three earned runs in 11 innings, with 15 strikeouts.

In other sportsthis week:

* Another team on a roll early is the Westminster softball team.

The Owls will be looking to win their fifth game in sixtries today at South Carroll. A balanced attack and steady pitching have been the keys for the Owls.

Steffanie Owings and Julie Backofhave done most of the damage offensively, while Jacqui Harmon and Stephanie Harrell have gotten the ball over the plate to let the Owls' defense do the job.

* Most Western Maryland College teams travel this weekend, highlighted by the baseball doubleheader at Moravian on Saturday. The squad entered the week 7-7 on the season and 1-3 in theMiddle Atlantic Conference's Southwest Section. Moravian began the week in sole possession of second in the section at 6-2.

The WMC softball team will be traveling to Winchester, Va., this weekend to participate in the Shenandoah College Tournament.

The Lady Green Terrors will play a round robin tourney on Saturday (vs. Wesley College at 11 a.m., Shenandoah at 1 p.m., and Averett at 3) with semifinals and finals on Sunday.
