Elliott fails in bid to win fifth straight AUTO RACING

April 06, 1992

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Alan Kulwicki regained the lead with 26 laps left and held on to win the Food City 500 NASCAR race yesterday by 78-hundredths of a second over Dale Jarrett.

The big story going into the race was Bill Elliott's bid to win his fifth straight race, which would have tied a modern-era NASCAR record. But Elliott crashed on the 31st lap and again on lap 250 and was never a factor. He finished 20th.

Kulwicki started from the pole after setting a track record of 122.474 mph in qualifying on Friday. He led 283 laps to claim his second straight victory on Bristol's .533-mile oval. He also won the Bud 500 last fall.

Kulwicki's victory in the Hooters Thunderbird continued Ford's dominance of the NASCAR season. Fords have won all six races this year and 10 straight dating back to last October.

Jarrett had taken the lead on a restart on lap 439. Kulwicki dogged his tracks until lap 474, when he dipped below him through turns three and four to pass and pulled away for the victory.

The second place for Jarrett, who drives a Chevrolet for Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, was his first top-10 finish of the year. Ken Schrader was third in a Chevrolet.

Kulwicki earned $83,360, averaging 86.316 mph before a record crowd of 62,300.

Points leader Davey Allison, who had finished in the top five of every race this season, was among the leaders through most of the race before he crashed on lap 282. He finished 28th but maintained a 29-point lead over Elliott in the overall standings.
