Fowler, Simonsick score in Home Run Ballpark finish brings out a crowd

It was difficult to determine the motivating factor for the bulk of the field of 2,000 in yesterday's fourth annual Oriole Advocates 8K Home Run: to run in a road race or to finish inside Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Next to the Oriole Advocates' constant pleas to "Please, keep off the grass," the most commonplace refrain was: "Wow, I can't believe this."

The three previous Oriole Advocates 8K Home Runs had started at Memorial Stadium, gone out and back and finished inside the 33rd Street stadium.

Finishing inside the new ballpark this year was the reason women's winner Eleanor Simonsick was in the race. And although it wasn't the only reason for the presence of men's winner Ken Fowler, it had a lot to do with why he chose to run here instead of in yesterday's Cherry Blossom 10K in Washington.

"That's the only reason I ran it," Simonsick, 33, of Baltimore, said about the finish inside the new stadium. "I'm training for the 3,000-meter Olympic trials, and there's a big difference between 3,000 meters and 5 miles. I had run several Oriole Advocates 8Ks before and thought that this year's race was going to be the same. When I found out that it was going to finish here, I got in the race."

Fowler, who finished in 24 minutes, 38 seconds, said: "I had never been in here before, . . . and I was kind of psyched up last night. Now, if I can only find a place to hide until Monday [for the Opening Day game], I'll be OK."

The popularity of the 8K Home Run is increasing. The race reached its limit of 2,000 entries four weeks ago, the earliest closing time race director Les Kinion could remember.

A pre-event trial, such as the one the Orioles held against the New York Mets on Friday, may have ensured a smoother running. The 8:30 a.m. start was delayed by 30 minutes.

"The Baltimore City Police were not ready," said Bob Feldman, who oversaw the finish line. "We can't start the race until the streets are ready. The runners' safety always comes first."

Fowler was among the early leaders for the first leg, up 33rd Street.

"We were all together up to the mile," said Fowler, 26, of Catonsville. "No one wanted to take the lead because of the wind. We went through the mile at five minutes, which isn't particularly fast, but I made my move and went through two [miles] at 9:56, so I brought it down a little bit."

Both Fowler and Simonsick said the largely downhill course was responsible for their fast times.

"I felt tight the whole way, but the time was fast," said Fowler, whose personal record for 8 kilometers is 24:12. "I can't believe the time; I guess it's because of the downhill."

Said Simonsick, who finished in 27:54: "I really wanted to go sub 28 minutes. The downhill is a big advantage to me. When we were on a downhill, I was going by a lot of men. On the uphill, I would come back to them."
