Commissioner's Office -- Announced that the 60-day drug suspension of Montreal Expos C Gilberto Reyes was overturned in favor of treating him as a first-time offender who will undergo drug rehabilitation.

Baltimore Orioles -- Assigned IF Juan Bell and OF Luis Mercedes to Triple-A Rochester. Put P Jim Poole (shoulder tendinitis) on the DL.

Boston Red Sox -- Sent C John Flaherty to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Detroit Tigers -- Assigned C Rich Rowland, P Steve Cummings and P Tony Castillo to Triple-A Toledo. Signed free agent P Les Lancaster, who had been released by the Cubs this week. Placed P Dan Gakeler on the DL.

Kansas City Royals -- Assigned P Curt Young to Triple-A Omaha.

Minnesota Twins -- Optioned P Willie Banks to Triple-A Portland. Placed 1B Kent Hrbek on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Sunday, and 3B Mike Pagliarulo on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Saturday. Returned P Jesse Cross to the Blue Jays.

Montreal Expos -- Placed C Gilberto Reyes on the 15-day DL.

New York Yankees -- Purchased the contract of C Mike Stanley from Triple-A Columbus. Placed P Scott Kamieniecki on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Thursday.

San Diego Padres -- Sent C Tom Lampkin outright to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Texas Rangers -- Placed American League batting champion 2B Julio Franco (patella tendinitis in his right knee) on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Saturday. Signed IF Al Newman, who had been released by the Reds. Released OF Gary Pettis, who was scheduled to earn a $1.053 million base salary this season.

Toronto Blue Jays -- Placed P Ken Dayley on the 15-day DL. Claimed P Shawn Hillegas on waivers from the Indians.

Basketball Dallas Mavericks -- Placed F Terry Davis on the injured list. Signed G Tom Garrick to a second 10-day contract.

Colleges Clemson -- Basketball G Anthony Smith (eight points total in eight games) received his release and announced he plans to transfer to Furman.

Fort Lewis -- Named Bruce Grimes athletic director.

Louisiana State -- Announced that C Shaquille O'Neal will skip his senior year and enter the NBA draft.

Football New York Jets -- Signed RB Freeman McNeil to a one-year contract.
