April 03, 1992

Maryland women's basketball coach Chris Weller has been named Naismith national Coach of the Year, in voting conducted by the Atlanta Tip-Off Club.

Weller, who was named Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year this season for the second time in her 17-year career, guided the Terps to a 25-6 mark and a berth in the Mideast Regional final, where Maryland was defeated by Western

Kentucky, 75-70, last Saturday.

The Terps began the year ranked No. 15 in national polls, but steadily climbed and spent four weeks at No. 1. This year's record is Weller's fifth-best overall, but her best mark in the past three years. During her career, all of it at Maryland, Weller has a record of 353-135, with eight ACC titles and three Final Four appearances.
