No. 1 Calvert Hall edges Curley, 6-5

Brian Matz struck out 13 in five innings and scored on a squeeze play in a three-run sixth inning to lead top-ranked Calvert Hall (3-1, 2-0) over visiting Archbishop Curley (3-1, 0-1), 6-5, yesterday in a Maryland Scholastic Association A Conference game.

Mark Bailey's one-out hit in the bottom of the eighth inning drove home Phil McGinnis from first and lifted No. 6 Old Mill (2-0) over visiting South River (0-4), 4-3, in a non-league game.

Kenny Cloude of McDonogh (5-1, 1-0) allowed five hits and struck out seven en route to a 2-0 shutout of host Loyola (1-2, 0-1) in an MSA A Conference game.

Charlie Kuykeneall's bases-loaded triple capped a seven-run, fifth inning as No. 15 South Carroll (3-0, 2-0) defeated host Linganore (2-2, 0-1), 9-2, in a Central Maryland Conference contest. South Carroll's Joe Goodwin allowed one hit and one earned run. He struck out seven and walked four.

Mike Leatherman hit three home runs, was 4-for-4 and had seven RBI to lead Thomas Johnson (3-1, 2-0) over North Carroll (0-3, 0-2), 13-3, in a Central Maryland Conference game.
