Chicago White Sox -- Signed OF Shawn Abner to a contract with Triple-A Vancouver.

Cincinnati Reds -- Released IF Al Newman. Sent C Troy Afenir and former Orioles OF Jeff Stone to minor-league camp for reassignment.

Cleveland Indians -- Offered P Mike Thomas back to the Expos for $25,000 as part of the Rule V draft. Announced that P Jeff Shaw has cleared waivers and accepted assignment to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Houston Astros -- Sent IF Benny Distefano to minor-league camp for reassignment. Released IF Ernest Riles from his minor-league contract.

Minnesota Twins -- Optioned C Derek Parks to Triple-A Portland.

Montreal Expos -- Released P Terry Leach and former Orioles OF Phil Bradley.

Walsh -- Fired men's basketball coach Ron Frederes.

Western Carolina -- Appointed Larry L. Travis director of athletics. Travis has been associate athletic director at Navy since 1989.
