An East Baltimore man was hospitalized in guarded condition early today after being shot in the chest last night by a city policeman.

Police said Officer Michael McGee of the Eastern District and another officer, whose name was not available, were in the 1500 block of Bethel St. shortly after 10 p.m. when they were stopped by two people who told them that a woman on a nearby street was carrying a gun.

The two officers went to the 1600 block of E. Federal St., police said, and observed a woman in the company of a man. And as the two officers approached, they said, the woman gave the gun to the man.

Then, the officers reported, the man turned toward them and made a threatening gesture with the gun.

Officer McGee, police said, took his handgun out of its holster and fired two shots at the man, hitting him once in the chest.

Police said the man, identified as Bernard Hilton, 22, of the 1000 block of Abbot Court, was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Medical Center, where early today he was listed in guarded condition.

At the scene, police said, they picked up a .32 caliber handgun and arrested the woman.

Her name was not immediately available.

Neither officer was injured, police said.
