Nicholson repeats as Lady Avia champ

When Stacey Nicholson ran a personal record in last year's Baltimore Ladies Classic 10K, her victory came as a surprise to few. When she won yesterday's Lady Avia Classic 10K, formerly the Baltimore Ladies Classic, it was considerably more of one.

Last year, Nicholson was in peak shape and pointing toward the Boston Marathon. This year, she was coming off five months of rehabilitation for plantarfasciitis, an inflammation of a lower-leg muscle.

"I just had to finish my rehabilitation," Nicholson, 29, of Baltimore, said after she finished the Lady Avia in 36 minutes, 44 seconds -- 12 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Marianne Jensen. "I just really started running again two weeks ago. I was doing 10 miles a week, but two weeks ago, I went over 20 for the first time."

A mile into the Lady Avia, she was where she might have been expected to be -- running comfortably but 10 yards behind co-leaders Jensen and Maureen Hall and five yards behind third-place runner Marge Rosasco.

"I passed Maureen by two miles, but it took until three miles to catch Marianne, and I stayed with her until four," Nicholson said. "I guess it was around 4 1/2 when I passed her, where you have to do that turnaround thing at the Fort [McHenry]."

Once in the lead, Nicholson knew the race was far from over. The runners had to battle a 20 mph northwest head wind for the return to the Inner Harbor and the finish at Rash Field.

"It was horrendous," Nicholson said. "I live down here, so I knew what was coming."

Rosasco, 43, of Joppa, who was running the 16th edition of the springtime women's race -- the Lady Equitable before it was the Baltimore Ladies Classic for two years -- also knew what was coming.

"I didn't have a whole lot of fun," said Rosasco, the founder of the Lady Equitable and the fourth-place overall and masters winner in 38:33 Sunday. "I know I can do better than I did today. I'm not pleased with my finish."

For Jensen, the run was the culmination of a busy week in which she returned from her native Oslo, Norway, to complete wedding plans for later this year.

"The wind bothered me a lot," said Jensen, a graduate student at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health who broke her PR by a minute in the Lady Avia, "but it wasn't just me; it was all of us."
