State police yesterday charged an administrator at Crownsville StateHospital with planning to rob a Fort Meade bank.
Investigators said they were tipped off Sunday that a handgun had been hidden in an abandoned building on the hospital's grounds. They found a .45-caliberSmith & Wesson inside a duffel bag with gloves and other materials -- "Stuff you would use to do an armed robbery," said Sgt. Dave Michael.
Charles Pettit, 42, of the 23000 block of Rolling Forkway in Gaithersburg, was charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery and reckless endangerment, Michael said.
Police arrested Pettit when he arrived for work yesterday morning, Michael said.
Detectives believe Pettit was trying to persuade others to help him rob the Fort MeadeCredit Union, Michael said.
