Johnson on drive for rookie award

March 20, 1992

It has been a busy week for Charlotte's Larry Johnson, prime candidate for NBA Rookie of the Year honors.

In Tuesday night's victory over San Antonio, he grabbed 10 rebounds, breaking Kurt Rambis' club record for most rebounds in a season. He has 713, with 19 games to play.

In successive games against Minnesota and Dallas last week, Johnson grabbed 23 and 18 rebounds, respectively.

Last night he had 34 points, eight of them in overtime, in Charlotte's 123-116 victory.

"I try not to worry about it," he said of the Rookie award. "All it does is create extra pressure. If I get it, I get it. It would be a great honor."
