Spalding Will Form Swimming Team

March 19, 1992

Archbishop Spalding will join Severn next winter as the only county schools fielding swim teams.

Athletic Director Domenic Pachence announced yesterday that Spalding will be ready to compete during the 1992-1993 season, most likely in the Maryland Scholastic Association BConference.

"We've sent kids to the MSA meets in the past, but this will beour first team," Pachence said. "We've had about 25 kids respond so far, and I know we'll get a fair number of freshmen who will come out for tryouts in October or November."

The team will be coached by Bill McDonagh, a Frostburg State graduate who serves as head coach of the Theresa Banks Swim Club in Glenarden. The Cavaliers will use the Fairland Aquatic Club facility in Laurel.

"There's always been a biginterest in swimming at Spalding and in Anne Arundel County, in general," Pachence said. "But until you get a facility to commit to you, there's nothing you can do about it. We probably could have done this10 years ago if we had a facility."

If there is a large turnout, Pachence said, the school could field both varsity and junior varsityteams.
