Former Severna Park three-time All-County girls soccer player Colleen Corwell has been hired as head coach of the women's soccer team at American University in Washington.
Corwell graduated from Severna Park in 1985 after setting season and career scoring records for the Falcons, and went on to become a four-year starter for the College ofWilliam & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
"I am very excited about getting the position because this is exactly what I want to do," said Corwell, who participated in four Division I NCAA tournaments. "I am fortunate to start out as head coach ata young age."
Corwell, 25, has coached at the youth, high school,college and state levels since graduating from William & Mary.
She became an assistant at American last year after returning to her alma mater at Severna Park where she assisted her former coach, Joyce Stefancik.
During the summer, Corwell teams up with George Washington University head women's coach Shannon Higgins to run the Lanzera Soccer Camp for girls age 6 to 18.
The clinic emphasizes fundamentals, developing a winning attitude and having fun playing soccer.
"I really believe this is going to be a fantastic camp," said Corwell,who will bring the camp to her old stomping grounds at Kinder Park in Severna Park, Aug. 3-7. "My partner (Higgins) is a member of the United States women's national team that won the World Cup last fall."
