Va. couple has calendar for the long run

RUNING

March 17, 1992|By Michael Reeb | Michael Reeb,Staff Writer

Jeff and Laurel Huff traveled from their home in Reston, Va., to compete in Maryvale Prep's Rite of Spring 5K nine days ago. The trip proved worth the effort when Jeff finished fifth overall and Laurel sixth in the women's division.

But the race proved doubly worthwhile when Rite of Spring race director Dave Cooley let the Huffs distribute order forms for their "Washington Area Racing Calendar," which they began producing this year.

The first issue contained listings for about 225 races in the northern Virginia-District of Columbia-southern Maryland area.

"We're not comprehensive on Baltimore yet," Jeff, 29, said from his home last week, "but we're comprehensive on the district, on southern Maryland and as far south as Williamsburg. We worked for about three months at the end of last year gathering information, and that was as far as we could get in that time."

The Huffs, who met while running in college, had lived in Reston from 1985 to 1988 but moved to Germany for the next several years.

"When we returned, we couldn't believe that no one had begun a calendar yet," Jeff said. "Since we're both competitive runners, we decided to put one together. Hopefully, we'll make back the money we've spent producing it. It's no big moneymaker; it's just fun."

The cost of the calendar is $12.99, plus tax. For an order form, write: "Washington Area Running Calendar," 11637 Old Brookville Court, Reston, Va. 22094.
