NEW YORK -- Patrick Ewing had 20 points and six blocked shots and keyed a 75-35 advantage on the boards with 20 rebounds as New York earned its 1,000th home victory in a rout of the Charlotte Hornets, 107-78, last night.

The Hornets' club-record five-game winning streak ended, and they were held to their lowest scoring total of the season. Charlotte was averaging 118 points in winning 10 of its previous 13 outings.

The Knicks won their third in a row overall and their fifth straight at home.

Kendall Gill scored 25, but no one else had more than 12 for the Hornets, who shot 25 percent in the first quarter and 24 percent in the third.

John Starks finished with 15 points for the Knicks, who picked up their 1,000th home win with a member of the original Knicks in attendance, 72-year-old Ralph Kaplowitz. He scored 14 points in New York's first home victory, 64-62 over the Pittsburgh Ironmen on Nov. 16, 1946.

The Knicks out-rebounded Charlotte 40-17 in the first half, with Ewing grabbing 11 rebounds and scoring 16.
