Scranton freezes out Hopkins, 58-49 Blue Jays go cold in Div. III playoffs

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Johns Hopkins went scoreless for more than six minutes in the second half, enabling Scranton to post a 58-49 victory in the second round of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the NCAA Division III tournament.

The loss eliminated Hopkins (20-8) from post-season play.

After Hopkins had regained the lead at 31-30 with 14:43 remaining in regulation, the Blue Jays went cold, not scoring until 6:33 left. Scranton, meanwhile, scored 11 straight to go up, 41-31. Hopkins would get no closer than 46-40.

Frank Grzywacz led Hopkins with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Jay Gangemi added 10. Mark Beneski scored a game-high 26 for Scranton (25-2), and Andrea Pizzato scored 10 and pulled down 11 rebounds.

With 3:03 left in the opening half, Scranton began to gain control of the game, scoring the last six of the first half to go up 26-20.
