Fallston captures 1A, Region III title Girls basketball playoffs

Cindy Jenkins scored 12 points to lead Fallston to a 44-40 victory over Joppatowne in the Class 1A, Region III championship game last night at Fallston.

Top-seeded Fallston (17-6) raced out to a 14-4 first quarter lead over the third-seeded Mariners (10-9). Jenkins, a junior point guard, scored six points on short jumpers and center Suzy Harrison added added five more on free throws to pace the Mariners early.

But Joppatowne rallied when Jenkins went to the bench with three fouls midway through the second quarter.

The Mariners took the lead twice in the final two and a half minutes. Their last lead of 38-37 came with 2:49 left. But Pam Toth responded with a three-point play and Harrison banked in ** the game winner with 1:22 left.

In other games:

Glenelg won the Region I, Class 2A girls basketball championship with a 58-41 win over Middletown. It was Glenelg's second straight regional title.

Dana Hoffman had a career-high 18 rebounds for Glenelg. Tanissa Dorsey led Glenelg with 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Junior guard Theresa Arnett scored a game high 25 points to lead top-seeded Damascus to a 67-47 win over No. 2 seed Southern (AA) in the Class 2A Region III final. Sophomore center Laekeka Wesley scored a team-high 17 points for the Bulldogs, who trailed at the half by 29-21. Senior Talaya Barnett added 12.
