Crash kills Mount Airy woman

March 05, 1992

An elderly Frederick County woman was killed yesterday when she failed to grant the right of way to a tractor-trailer at an intersection about three miles southwest of Emmitsburg.

Police said Dorothy E. Duley, 80, of the 13900 block of Prospect Ave. in Mount Airy, was driving west on Md. 76 at 9:45 a.m. when she ran a stop sign at U.S. 15.

Ms. Duley's 1977 Chevrolet Nova was struck broadside on the driver's side by a northbound 18-wheel tractor-trailer driven by Barry Ray Newhouse, 49, of Middletown, Pa.

Ms. Duley was taken to Gettysburg Memorial Hospital, where she died a short time later.

A passenger in the car, Catherine Effie Peters, 76, of Keymar, was flown by a State Police Med-Evac helicopter to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, where she was admitted in serious condition.

Mr. Newhouse was not injured.
