Crash Victim 'Serious,' Remains In Hospital

A Mount Airy man remained in serious but stable condition at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore Tuesday following a head-on collision Friday on Route 32 in Dayton.

County police said Michael Spitz, 34, of the 100 block of Wicomico Court, was northbound near Linden Church Road at 6:35 p.m. when he crossed the median strip and collided with a 1986 Pontiac Trans Am driven by Darren Murphy of Detour.

Murphy, 26, of the 7500 block of Middleburg Road, was treated andreleased at Howard County General Hospital.

Three passengers in Murphy's car, Sandra Murphy, 25, of the same address, and John Able, 25, and Kelly Able, 24, both of Taneytown, were treated and released from Howard County General Hospital.

Police are investigating the accident. No charges have been filed.


Six persons were forced from their North Laurel home on Saturday by a basement fire that is under investigation, county firefighters said.

The fire, in the 9300 block of Madison Avenue, began at 11:40 p.m. and was quickly contained. Firefighters said the blaze caused about $30,000 damage to the basement and first floor.

The occupants of the home are staying with relatives.

5100 block of Eliots Oak Road: A Walkman was taken before 4:30 p.m. Friday from a house someone entered by breaking a window.

6799 Old Columbia Road: An undisclosed amount of cash and checks werediscovered stolen from Pierce Cleaners & Tailors Saturday.

9140 Guilford Road: Tin snips were used to cut through the sheet metal doorat Hanratty Bros. Inc. before 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Nothing was stolen.

5455 Harpers Farm Road: A bathroom door was spray painted and fire extinguishers taken from Kinder Care sometime before 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

10200 Wincopin Court: A 1991 Isuzu Rodeo was reported stolen at 3 p.m. Friday from a commercial area.


8400 block ofSpring Showers Way: A 1987 Suzuki Samurai was reported stolen at 7 a.m. Saturday from a residential area.

9500 block of Whiskey Bottom Road: Tools were reported stolen at 11 a.m. Saturdayfrom a shed that was pried open.
