Delaware man found dead in his jail cell

March 03, 1992

A 28-year-old Delaware man was found dead in his cell at the Harford County Detention Center after apparently suffocating himself with a pillowcase, officials reported yesterday.

Sheriff's deputies found William Ford of Wilmington lying face down on his bed at 4:35 p.m. Sunday with the pillowcase wrapped around his neck, said Officer DeWayne Curry, a spokesman for the sheriff's office.

A preliminary investigation has termed the death a suicide, but a state medical examiner will perform an autopsy, Officer Curry said.

Mr. Ford, who was serving a 30-day sentence for driving while intoxicated, had been confined to a private holding cell after he told jail officials he was concerned about his safety in the Bel Air jail, Officer Curry said.

"He had just been moved to the cell and they didn't have a chance to sit down and talk to him about why he was concerned," Officer Curry said.

Sheriff's deputies were making a routine check of Mr. Ford's cell when he was found. He was pronounced dead at Fallston General Hospital.
