William J. Awalt

March 02, 1992

William J. Awalt, a letter carrier for 44 years and a member of All Saints Roman Catholic Church for over a half-century, died Feb. 15 of pneumonia at Anne Arundel General Hospital. He was 97.

A Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Awalt was offered Feb. 20 at Our Lady in the Fields Church in Millersville by his son, Msgr. William J. Awalt Jr., of Washington, assisted by another son, Deacon James L. Awalt of Millersville. Rev. John Auer, pastor of Our Lady of the Fields Church, also assisted.

Until his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service in 1959, Mr. Awalt delivered mail -- in the early days by horse and buggy -- in primarily the Mount Washington and Gwynn Oak areas of Baltimore.

He was married for 58 years to the former Mary Molz of Baltimore. The couple lived in West Arlington for over 50 years before moving to Millersville. She died in 1978.

Besides the two sons who assisted in his funeral, other immediate survivors include two more sons, Robert F. Awalt of Timonium, and John E. Awalt of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a daughter, Patricia M. Manning of Millersville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family suggested that contributions be made to the building fund of Our Ladies of the Fields in Millersville, 1069 Cecil Ave., Baltimore 21108.
