February 28, 1992

An 11-year-old Columbia girl died yesterday afternoon at the Maryland Shock-Trauma Center in Baltimore a short time after she was struck by a van after getting off a school bus near her home.

Howard County police said the victim, Malohika Bagchi of the 12100 block of Graystar Way, got off the bus in the 12200 block of Little Patuxent Parkway shortly before 4 p.m. and was walking across the eastbound lane of the road toward her home when she was hit by a van driven by Charles H. Smith Jr., 21, of the 4900 block of Challedon Road in West Baltimore.

The girl was flown by a State Police Med-Evac helicopter to Shock Trauma.

The school bus had its warning lights flashing at the time of the accident and charges are pending against Smith, police said.

Police said Smith, an employee of Rent-A-Center of America in the 5500 block of Reisterstown Road, was making a delivery when he struck the girl.
