Malas replaced in opera

February 26, 1992

Claude Corbeil will replace Baltimore native Spiro Malas as Sulpice in the Baltimore Opera Company's production of Donizetti's "The Daughter of the Regiment" next month.

Mr. Malas was released from his contract to continue to appear in the Broadway revival of the musical "The Most Happy Fella," the BOC said. Mr. Corbeil appeared as Sulpice in the 1984 BOC production of "Regiment."

Also, the opera will be sung and spoken in English rather than in French, as originally announced. The change was made at the request of conductor Louis Salemno and director John Lehmeyer to make the production more accessible, the company said.
